Biography

Dr. Clark, who received his Ph.D. in Medieval History at Columbia University in 2002, comes to Catholic University from Christendom College, where he spent the past five years teaching Greek and Latin to undergraduates. Before that, he spent six years at Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula, CA, where he taught the Great Books.

Dr. Clark’s specialty is the history of medieval theology and in particular the Bible and theology during the second half of the twelfth century. During the past seven years he has travelled frequently to Europe (to Paris and Troyes in France, and to Bologna, Padua, and Rome in Italy) to lecture on the development of the first university textbooks, which became the basis for the teaching of the Bible in universities across Europe for centuries. He spent this past summer as a Visiting Professor at the University of Padua. He has a contract with the flagship Medieval Law and Theology Series of PIMS Press to publish six books over the next ten years (a monograph followed by texts and translations).

Prior to enrolling at Columbia University, Dr. Clark, whose law degree is from Duke University, worked as an attorney with Arnall, Golden, and Gregory in Atlanta, Georgia, specializing in the then-incipient field of intellectual property. Dr. Clark left the practice of law to sing professionally both in the United States and in Europe. Dr. Clark, however, found his true calling in teaching when, home for a holiday in August, he was hired at a prep school (Delbarton School in Morristown, NJ) to teach ancient languages as well as ancient and medieval history. While finishing his thesis, he also taught at another prep school (Portsmouth Abbey in Portsmouth, RI), where he taught French, German, Latin and founded the Humanities Program.
