Brian Rhude

Brian Rhude returns to Light the World! Summer Institute as the Program Director after serving as an undergraduate counselor in 2017 and 2018. Brian took over as the Assistant Director of Summer Programs and Formation for the Lay Apostolate after receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies from the Catholic University of America in 2020. Before attending CatholicU, Brian received his Associate of Science from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. Brian directs Light the World!, collaborates with other staff on the planning and execution of other summer programs, and does formation work with undergraduate students during the academic year.

In 2019, Brian was one of two US representatives to the International Post-Synod Forum on Young People, hosted by the Vatican Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life. Brian has spoken at various regional and national conferences on Youth and Young Adult Ministry and Spiritual Accompaniment including the 2019 Young Adult Ministry Summit in Chicago, Illinois and the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Congress in Baltimore, MD. Brian serves on the National Advisory Team for Young Adult Ministry to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and is a Masters Candidate at Loyola Univeristy, New Orleans.

Dr. Susan Timoney

Dr. Susan Timoney serves as the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America. Susan M. Timoney received her Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (The Angelicum) in 1997. Dr. Timoney was appointed Assistant Secretary for Pastoral Ministry and Social Concerns for the Archdiocese of Washington in 2010 and served as Assistant Secretary and Secretary until her appointment as Associate Professor in 2018. Dr. Timoney began teaching as a lecturer in 1998 in the undergraduate program and in 2016 was appointed an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Theology and Religious Studies. Dr. Timoney is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the fields of evangelization and pastoral leadership serving on numerous boards of directors including Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington and the Catholic Apostolate Center.

Our team of undergraduate CUA counselors are some of the most faith-filled, outgoing, and fun students from across the country. The counselors study a variety of majors at CUA and perform at the highest levels. They are very excited to meet, guide, and walk this journey of faith/culture with the youth they encounter.

School of Theology and Religious Studies

Light the World! is housed in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at CUA. This provides access to internationally renowned theologians who are faculty members that serve as advisers to the program. Additionally, these theologians present on the academic connection of faith and art, sports, business, science, and politics during Light the World!
