  • John Grabowski has been appointed to serve as a theological Advisor to the U.S.C.C.B.'s Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family and Youth from 2014 -2016. This is second time serving in this capacity. The first was as an advisor to the subcommittee on Marriage and Family from 2007-2009. He and his wife Claire continue to serve as a Member couple on the Pontifical Council for the Family.

  • Msgr McPartlan at ITC Plenary

    From 2-6 December 2013, Msgr Paul McPartlan was in Rome, participating in the plenary meeting of the International Theological Commission in the Vatican. The meeting, the last of the present quinquennium, continued work on three main topics: monotheism in relation to violence; Christian social doctrine in the context of Christian doctrine as a whole; and the sensus fidei . The commission had an audience with Pope Francis on Friday, 6 December, in which the Holy Father particularly spoke about the ITC document, Theology Today , published last year, and now translated into many languages.

    Rev. Thomas John Varickamthotty will be presenting his defense for the degree of Doctor of Ministry on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, in the Happel Room. His defense is titled The Relationship Between the Parish Eucharist and the Life of Small Christian Communities in Their Neighborhoods.

  • Annual AAR/SBL conference

    Several of our faculty and graduate students participated in the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. This conference was held in Baltimore, Maryland over November 23-26, 2013.

  • Fr. Lombardo Publishes Book on the Crucifixion

    Fr. Lombardo's book, The Father's Will: Christ's Crucifixion and the Goodness of God , was published last week by Oxford University Press. Drawing on philosophical analysis and historical-critical exegesis, The Father's Will sets out to clarify the Father's will for Christ and how it relates to his death on the cross. Then, after considering the theologies of Anselm and Peter Abelard, it argues for the recovery of the early Christian category of ransom.

  • Msgr. Irwin Publishes Article on Ecology

    Msgr. Irwin published an article,"The World As God's Icon. Creation, Sacramentality and Liturgy" in Environmental Justice and Climate Change . The article assessed Pope Benedict XVI's Ecological Vision for the Catholic Church in the United States and was edited by Jame Schaefer and Tobias Winright. (Lanham, Boulder, New York, Toronto: Lexington Books, 2012) pp. 149-171.

  • Msgr. Irwin Lectures in Rockville Center

    On Monday Nov 11th Msgr. Irwin delivered a main address as well as presided and preached at the Study Day sponsored by the local chapter of the National Association for Pastoral Musicians on the topic of "The Role of Liturgy in the New Evangelization."

    Very Reverend Mark Morozowich served as moderator to the panel "Believing, Seeing, and Knowing the Mystery of God", delivered by Rev. Paolo Prosperi and Rev. Carlo Lorenzo Rossetti. The panel was part of the conference "Faith: The Fundamental Act of Christian Existence", hosted by the Pontifical John Paul II Institute over November 15 and 16.

    Ajani Gibson is still "walking on air" this evening in Rome after a papal audience earlier today. The visit to St. Peter's Square was organized by the CUA Campus in Rome where Gibson, a junior theology major from our school, is a student this semester.

  • Msgr. Stephen Rossetti gives conference in Munich on Child Protection

    Msgr. Stephen Rossetti is a member of the Scientific Advisory board of the Centre for Child Protection of the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He attended their annual meeting in Munich on Nov 7th and the next day he gave a day long presentation to over 100 diocesan officials who work for the Catholic Church in Germany. He spoke primarily on the clinical experience and research data relating to priests who sexually abuse minors. He shared some of the mistakes that have been made by Church institutions in dealing with this terrible tragedy in the past and what we can learn from these mistakes. He recommended that the Catholic Church around the world adopt aggressive child safe policies and thus making the entire Church a safer place for children.

  • Sacrosanctum Concillium 50th Anniversary Scholarly Symposium Held

    International scholars gathered at The Catholic University of America for a symposium honoring the 50th Anniversary of the promulgation of the Second Vatican Council's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concillium): Tradition and Progress. The purpose of the symposium was to encourage high level scholarly discussion in order to rekindle enthusiasm for the hope and challenge offered to us by the Constitution. Dean Mark Morozowich welcomed the participants and commented: "this opportunity to engage the tradition of the Catholic Church and to look at the interplay with liturgical progress presents an important moment for us to reflect critically and enter into frank discussion about the future."(For more information on the symposium, click here .)

    William D. Dinges served as a symposium discussion panelist at the 36th Annual National Conference of the Catholic Volunteer Network (CVN) held at the Sheraton Hotel, Silver Spring, MD, Nov. 7 -9. Dr. Dinges gave a response to the findings of a Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) Research Project Report on former CVN volunteers.

    On 9 October 2013, Msgr Paul McPartlan delivered a lecture entitled, 'Christ our Light: Lumen Gentium and the Program of Vatican II' at a Symposium on the New Evangelization held at CUA and co-hosted by the School of Theology and Religious Studies and Theological College.

  • Msgr. Irwin Lectures to Camden Clergy

    On Thursday November 7th Msgr. Irwin gave a presentation to the priests and deacons of the diocese of Camden on assessing the implementation of Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy fifty years after its promulgation. This was the last of four presentations in a series discussing the four Constitutions from the Second Vatican Council to mark the Year of Faith. Among the other presenters in the series was Msgr. Paul McPartlan of STRS.

    From 24-26 October, Msgr Paul McPartlan and Fr John Galvin took part in a meeting of the North American Orthodox-Catholic Theological Consultation at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Renewal Center, Mississauga, near Toronto, Canada.

  • Dr. Grabowski attends Pontifical Council for the Family in Rome

    John Grabowski and his wife Claire attended the 21st Plenary Session of the Pontifical Council for the Family in Rome as a member couple from the United States on October 23-25, 2013. The session discussed the upcoming Synod on Family announced by Pope Francis and discussed the further implementation of the Holy See's Charter of the Rights of the Family on its 30th anniversary. In addition to meeting Pope Francis, they took part in the Pilgrimage of Families to the tomb of St. Peter in Saint Peter's square on October 26th and 27th.

  • Dr. Tapie Presents Paper at 2013 Patristic, Medieval, and Renaissance Conference

    As part of a panel on the Theological Reading of Scripture in the Middle Ages at Villanova University's 2013 PMR Conference, Dr. Tapie presented a paper entitled "Peace as the Reconciliation of Jew and Gentile in St. Thomas Aquinas's Commentary on Ephesians."

  • Dr. Toom Gives Opening Paper at International Patristic Conference

    Dr. Tarmo Toom gave an opening paper at an International Patristic Conference "Between religio licita and religio regalis: The Church and Theology of the Times of Change" (The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland; Oct 21-23). His paper was titled "Constantine's Deus Summus and the Nicene Unus Deus: Imperial Agenda and Ecclesiastical Conviction" and it compared the imperial and concilar concepts of God.

  • Msgr. Clay Offers Presentations on New Diocesan Norms for Confirmation

    On October 19, Msgr. Clay was a featured speaker at the annual Catholic Convocation sponsored by the Diocese of Raleigh. His presentations explored the formation of adolescents in light of the New Evangelization and pastoral applications related to the recently promulgated Confirmation norms of the diocese. Msgr. Clay served as the principal writer of the norms.

  • Dean Morozowich Participates in ATS Accreditation Team

    The Association of Theological Schools invited Fr. Mark Morozowich to be a member of the evaluation team for St. Vladimir's Seminary in Crestwood, NY. The visitation took place October 21 -24, 2013. The Seminary, affiliated with the Orthodox Church of America, educates seminarians and lay people. They also house the St. Vladimir's Seminary Press a leading English language Orthodox Academic Press.

  • Dr. Miller Publishes Article on Imagery in the Psalms

    Dr. Robert Miller has published "What are the Nations doing in the Chaoskampf," in Creation and Chaos: A Reconsideration of Hermann Gunkel's Chaoskampf Hypothesis, edited by JoAnn Scurlock and Richard H. Beal. The volume is a publication of a conference held in 2011, and Dr. Miller's essay examines the motif of all nations making pilgrimage to Jerusalem to worship God, which was added by the Psalms to a cluster of mythological images borrowed from Canaanite tradition.

  • Fr. Ford Gives Presentation on Dei Verbum and Lumen Fidei

    On October 16 and 23, Fr. John Ford gave presentations on "Dei Verbum: Vatican II's Teaching on Revelation," and "Lumen Fidei: The Teaching of Pope Francis on Faith" for the Adult Education program at St. Elizabeth's Church, Rockville, MD.

  • Dr Boxall Publishes Article in The Expository Times

    Dr Ian Boxall has published an article entitled 'The Apocalypse Unveiled: Reflections on the Reception History of Revelation' in The Expository Times (currently published on-line prior to print publication). This article surveys the main stages in the reception history of John's visionary book (including in art and music), and attempts to categorize these diverse readings and highlight similarities between them.

  • Dr. Grabowski Gives Presentation at Loyola Marymount University

    Dr. John Grabowski gave a presentation for Loyola Marymount's Campus Ministry entitled "Pornography: What's in a Look?" on October 7th. The presentation examined the pornography epidemic in the U.S. and its impact on individuals, couples and society as a whole.

  • Dr. Benson Gives Talk on St. Francis of Assisi at Smithsonian Associates

    Dr. Joshua C. Benson presented at the Smithsonian Associates on October 8, 2013. He gave a talk entitled Francis of Assisi: A Humble Gesture. The talk explored the person and legacy of Francis of Assisi and reflected on why the current Pope took the name Francis.

  • Dr. Jones Presents Paper at Duke University

    Charles B. Jones presented the paper "The Establishment of Chinese Ordination Platforms in Taiwan during the Japanese Period 1895-1945" at the conference "Bordering the Borderless: Faces of Modern Buddhism in East Asia" held at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, on October 4-5, 2013.

  • 2013 Dean's Vespers

    The 2013 Dean's Vespers on Thursday, September 26 at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington, D.C., drew hundreds of people from across the university community. Very Rev. Mark Morozowich, Dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies, during his homily, accentuated the intimate connection between the academic life and the deepening of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ as the root of all that we do. In his closing remarks, Father Mark thanked God for the gifts already bestowed and asked God to bless the students, faculty, and the staff as well as their families as we begin this new school year.

  • Msgr. Irwin Gives Presentations on “The Reformed Liturgy” throughout Diocese of Richmond

    On August 6th, 7th and 8th Msgr. Kevin Irwin, Monsignor Walter J. Schmitz Professor of Liturgical Studies, delivered day long presentations to the Clergy and professional staffs of parishes and schools in the diocese of Richmond on "The Theology and Practice of the Reformed Liturgy." It was held in three locations in the diocese: Roanoke, Newport News and Richmond itself.

  • Msgr. Irwin Delivers Lecture at Archdiocese of Los Angeles Liturgical Congress

    On June 28-29th Msgr. Irwin, Monsignor Walter J. Schmitz Professor of Liturgical Studies, delivered lectures at the Liturgical Congress of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on "Liturgy Does Us: Theology and Spirituality of the Liturgy." On Friday he spoke to priests, deacons and other fulltime pastoral ministers. That evening he concelebrated the Congress Eucharist with CUA Trustee Archbishop Jose Gomez. The following day he spoke to liturgical ministers.

  • Msgr. Irwin Presents at 2013 Convocation Assembly for Oblates of St. Francis De Sales

    On June 26th former Dean Msgr. Kevin Irwin gave presentations at the Convocation Assembly 2013 of both provinces of the Oblates of St. Francis De Sales at De Sales University, Allentown, Pa. entitled "What We Have Done, What We Have Failed To Do -- Assessing the Liturgical Reforms of Vatican II Fifty Years Later." His presentations were preceded the day before by talks by John O'Malley, SJ Johannes Quasten awardee from STRS and followed the next day by talks by Andrew Ciferni, O. Praem. former STRS faculty member. During the Convocation he spoke with the students and the vocation director from the western province of the Oblates who will be moving to D.C. this summer and attending STRS this fall.

  • Msgr. Michael Clay leads Evangelization Conference for the Diocese of Savannah

    Msgr. Clay led a two-day conference on evangelization for over 150 pastors and pastoral leaders in the Diocese of Savannah. The conference, held September 27-28, explored basic evangelization dynamics and history and addressed the "new" evangelization in terms of contemporary methodologies required for this evangelization. It also addressed 21st century secular and ecclesial issues that are positively and negatively impacting people's faith journeys and specifically their relationship to the Catholic Church.

  • Msgr McPartlan Speaks to Camden Clergy

    On Friday 27 September, Msgr Paul McPartlan gave a lecture entitled 'The Eucharist Makes the Church' to clergy of the Diocese of Camden, New Jersey, as part of a series of lectures being given by guest speakers under the heading: 'Reflecting on Vatican II'. Msgr McPartlan related his theme particularly to the council's dogmatic constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium.

  • Dean Mark Morozowich Publishes Article in Annuarium Historiae Conciliorum

    Very Rev. Mark Morozowich, dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies, published an article entitled "Ecclesiology and Liturgy as Interpretative Keys for Orientalium Ecclesiarium at Fifty" in Annuarium Historiae Conciliorum 43:2 (2011). Dean Morozowich addresses the historical context of the Decree on the Oriental Churches, its theological content, and its effects on the Church since the Second Vatican Council as well as mentioning areas for future development within the Church.

  • Dr. Dominic Serra Publishes Article on “Postbaptismal Rites in Early Roman Practice” in Studia Liturgica

    Dominic Serra delivered a paper entitled, "Postbaptismal Rites in Early Roman Practice," at the Societas Liturgica Congress in Reims, France. It was selected for inclusion in the Societas proceedings published in the most recent issue of Studia Liturgica 42: 176-189. The article examines textual evidence in the Gelasian Sacramentary in relation to similar material in Ambrose of Milan, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Mai Fragment.

  • Dr. Miller’s Book on Exegesis Made Available to Students in Developing World

    Dr. Robert Miller's 2007 book, Syriac and Antiochian Exegesis and Biblical Theology for the 3rd Millennium (Gorgias Press) has been released electronically via the Society of Biblical Literature's International Cooperation Initiative. SBL provides free electronic access to selected publications to scholars and students in countries whose Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita is substantially lower than the average of the GDP per capita of the USA and the European Union.

  • Msgr. Michael Clay Presents Workshops on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults at Diocesan Conference

    Msgr. Michael Clay gave two workshops at the On Fire with Faith Conference sponsored by the Diocese of Charleston, September 20-21. The first workshop focused on the characteristics normative of initiatory and kergymatic catechesis in the formation of unbaptized adults and children of catechetical age. The second explored issues unique to baptized candidates that require special attention during their formation and that are distinct from the needs of the unbaptized.

  • Dr Boxall Publishes Article in Online Journal Relegere

    Dr Ian Boxall has just published 'In Search of John's Island: Patmos in Botticelli and Burgkmair' in the online journal Relegere: Studies in Religion and Reception 3/1 (2013) 25-39. Based on a paper originally delivered to the Society of Biblical Literature International Meeting, it explores two very different visual depictions of St John on Patmos, reflecting the cultural contexts and interests of their respective artists.

  • Dr. John Grabowski Presents Paper at 2013 Intellectual Tasks Conference

    Dr. John Grabowski Presented a Paper " Catechesis and Moral Theology: Toward a Renewed Understanding of Christian Experience" at the 2013 Intellectual Tasks Conference in Washington, D.C., May 12-14, 2013. The conference was organized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop's Committee on Doctrine and the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis. The paper explored recent questions and controversies generated by the category of experience in the fields of catechetics and moral theology and argued that a recovery of the centrality of the encounter with Christ in these fields is the key to understanding the place of experience within them.

  • Dr. Robert Miller OFS Publishes Article in Wiener Zeitschrift für die Kunde des Morgenlandes

    Dr. Miller has just published "Shamanism in Early Israel," in Wiener Zeitschrift für die Kunde des Morgenlandes 101: 309-42. Derived from a paper presented to the Society of Biblical Literature, Dr. Miller examines folk religion in Early Iron Age Israel.

    Dr. Charles B. Jones presented the lecture "Defining Humanity: Western and Asian Religious Perspectives" for the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, D.C. on September 16, 2013.

  • Fr. Nicholas Lombardo OP Publishes Article in Philippiniana Sacra and Katorikku Kenkyo

    Fr. Lombardo published "Thomas Aquinas on the Emotions" in Philippiniana Sacra 48 (2013) and a Japanese translation in Katorikku Kenkyo [Catholic Studies] 82 (2013). The article derives from a lecture he gave last year in Manila at the University of Santo Tomas and in Tokyo at Sophia University.

  • Msgr. Stephen Rossetti Publishes Article On Priesthood and Burnout

    Msgr. Stephen Rossetti in STRS and Dr. Colin Rhoades from the University of Maryland published "Burnout in Catholic Clergy: A Predictive Model Using Psychological and Spiritual Variables" in the peer-reviewed APA Journal Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, July 29,2013.  The results of their data driven study were that burnout among Catholic clergy, while often assumed to be high, was actually very low.  They also uncovered some of the more important variables influencing burnout which were job satisfaction, inner peace, low childhood psychological problems, relationship to God, and good friends.  On these variables, the priests were strongly positive and thus reported being less burned out.   • Dr. Miller Presents at World Congress of Jewish Studies

    Dr. Robert Miller presented a paper at the 16th World Congress of Jewish Studies, July 28-August 1, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. His paper, "Baals of Bashan," argued from archaeological and textual evidence that the Old Testament phrase "Bulls of Bashan" does not refer to famous cattle as most have interpreted it, but to bull cults and ritual practices.

  • Fr. Lombardo Publishes Chapter in Emotions and Health, 1200-1700

    Fr. Lombardo contributed a chapter titled "Emotions and Psychological Health in Aquinas" in Emotions and Health, 1200-1700 (Leiden: Brill, 2013). The book examines the Aristotelian and Galenic understandings of the 'passions' or 'accidents of the soul' as alterations of both mind and body across a wide range of medieval and early modern cultural discourses.

  • Rev. John T. Ford Delivers Slide Presentation at Annual Conference of Newman Association of America, Walsh University

    At the plenary session of the annual conference of the Newman Association of America, at Walsh University (North Canton, Ohio), Fr. John T. Ford c.s.c. gave a slide presentation on "John Henry Newman and Basil Anthony Moreau: Christian Educators in a Century of Secularism with a Message for Today." Two recent STRS doctoral graduates also gave presentations: Dr. Ono Ekeh, Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, Connecticut) on "God's Absence in Nature and the Inevitable Rise of Secular Science" and Dr. David P. Delio, Our Lady of the Holy Cross College (New Oreleans) on "The Church versus the Knowledge School: Newman's Critique of Secular Soteriology."

  • STRS Welcomes New Faculty

Stephanos Alexopoulos, Ph.D. - Liturgical Studies professor and author of the book The Presanctified Liturgy in the Byzantine Rite: A Comparative Analysis of its Origins, Evolution, and Structural Units. Areas of specialization include Byzantine Liturgical History and Eastern Liturgical Traditions, Liturgical Renewal, Catechesis, and Pastoral Praxis.

    Ian Boxall, D.Phil. - New Testament professor and author of the book Patmos in the Reception History of the Apocalypse .  Areas of specialization include the Book of Revelation, the Gospel of Matthew, the reception of the history of the New Testament.

    Robin Darling Young, Ph.D. - Spirituality professor and translator of the forthcoming book The Letters of Evagrius of Pontus .  Areas of specialization include Spirituality and Theology of Early Christianity, Monastic Thought and Practice, Syriac and Armenian Christianity in Late Antiquity.

  • Dr. Benson Publishes Translations in Writings on the Spiritual Life

    Dr. Benson publishes translations of Hugh of St. Victor's spiritual works, "The Five Sevens," and "On the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit," in the Victorine Texts in Translation Series volume entitled Writings on the Spiritual Life , published by Brepols.

  • Dr. Miller Publishes Article on the Song of Songs in Sacra Scripta

  • Dr. Robert D. Miller has published his article, "The Song of Songs: A Plea for an Aesthetical Reading," in Sacra Scripta , vol. 10, no. 2 (spring 2013), p. 113-119. In this essay, he calls for a literary reading of the Old Testament book that emphasizes aesthetic engagement with the reader.

  • Dr. Valkenberg Presents at Symposium on Sacred Texts and Human Contents at Nazareth College, Rochester, NY

    Dr. Pim Valkenberg gave a presentation on "Saint Francis of Assisi, Louis Massignon and Fethullah Gulen: Models of Peace-Oriented Interpretation of the Scriptures" at a symposium on Sacred Texts and Human Contents: A Symposium on the Role of Sacred Texts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in Uniting and Dividing Humanity. The symposium took place at the Hickey Center for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue, Nazareth College, Rochester, NY, June 23-25, 2013.

      Dr. Joshua Benson published the essay, "'Hold Back Nothing of Yourselves for Yourselves': Transitus Address 2012," The Cord 63:1 (2013), 27-35. The essay initially began as an address that was delivered on the feast of St. Francis.

    • Dr. Wilhelmus Valkenberg Presents Paper at International Symposium in Turkey

      Dr. Pim Valkenberg presented a paper, "The Role of Ghurba (Exile) as Physical and Spiritual Category in Jalaluddin Rumi and Said Nursi" at an international symposium on Said Nursi and Jalal al-Din Rumi in Konya (Turkey), May 24-26, 2013. The conference was organized by Konya Metropolitan Municipality, the Academic Research Foundation, and the Risale Academy.

    • Dr. Tarmo Toom Delivers Paper at Annual Meeting of the North American Patristics Society

      Professor Tarmo Toom delivered the paper, "What is St. Patrick's 'Creed' (conf. 4)?" at the Annual Meeting of the North American Patristics Society in Chicago (May 2013). His paper studied the genre, origin, sources, and compilation of Patrick's creedal statement and contended that it should be included to the study of the history of creeds.

    • Msgr. Stephen Rossetti Delivers Commencement Address at St. Mary’s Seminary and University

      Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti delivered the commencement address at St Mary's Seminary and University, and received a Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa, on Thursday, May 16th. Msgr Rossetti addressed the students on the importance of listening with the heart, and spoke of the increasing isolation among Americans and the need to build connections among people.

    • Dean Mark Morozowich Presents at Monterey Clergy Conference

      Very Rev. Mark Morozowich, dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies presented at the Diocese of Monterey's Clergy Study Days Conference entitled "Faith, Renewal and Mystagogy: Christ in our Midst Today". He focused on the relationship between faith and liturgy as it leads ministry for the New Evangelization.

    • STRS Presents Rev. E. Daley, S.J. 2013 Johannes Quasten Award

      On Thursday, May 1, STRS presented Rev. Brian E. Daley, S.J. of Notre Dame the 2013 Johannes Quasten Award. Following the presentation Rev. Daley delivered a lecture entitled, "Logos as Reason and Logos Incarnate: Philosophy, Theology, and the Voices of Tradition in the Early Church." A light reception followed.

      Fr. De Lillio, clinical assistant professor of homiletics with STRS recently published the article "Helping to Heal the Pain in the Pew: The Preachers Role" in the Homiletic and Pastoral Review. The article addresses healing the hurt from the sex abuse scandal.

    • Dr. John Grabowski Lectures on Marriage to CUA’s Chastity Outreach Group

      On Tuesday April 9th, Dr. Grabowski gave a presentation to Live Out Love (CUA's Chastity Outreach group) on "The Catholic Vision of Marriage: Beyond Soundbites and Superficiality." The presentation drew attention to the theologically and anthropologically dense nature of the Catholic theology of marriage as simultaneously biblical, anthropological, and liturgical, using the teaching of the Second Vatican Council and Blessed Pope John Paul II as examples.

    • Msgr. Stephen Rossetti receives John Paul II Seminary Leadership Award from NCEA

      On Monday April 1st in Houston at the President's dinner of the National Catholic Education Association Msgr Stephen J. Rossetti received the John Paul II Seminary Leadership Award. "The award is presented annually by the Seminary Department of the National Catholic Educational Association in recognition of distinguished service to the Roman Catholic seminaries in the United States and Canada....In choosing to present this award to a North American church leader, the department seeks to affirm the qualities of creativity, leadership, and service of individuals who contribute to the development of effective priestly formation programs in the U.S. and Canada." Msgr Rossetti was cited specifically for his research and writings on priestly formation and his over twenty years of service in the formation and care of seminarians and priests.

    • Msgr Rossetti gave Lenten days of reflection to the priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on March 11 and 12 and again to priests of the Archdiocese of Atlanta on March 26th. Msgr Rossetti focused his comments on our priestly call to holiness. He also spoke about the joy and gratitude that are part of our Christian faith.

      On February 18th and 26th , Dr. William Dinges delivered a series of lectures in Washington, D.C., on "Religion in American Life" and the "Separation of Church and State" to visiting delegations from Libya and Kazakhstan. The presentations were part of the International Visitors Program on Leadership and on Interfaith Dialogue sponsored by the US State Department.

    • Dr. David Lantigua Lectures On Freedom of Religion at the University of Notre Dame

      Dr. David Lantigua delivered a lecture at the University of Notre Dame on March 5 entitled "Early Modern Catholicism, Natural Rights, and the Freedom of Religion." This lecture was a part of an interdisciplinary workshop on religious freedom. It was presented with Matthew Gaetano, an Assistant Professor of History at Hillsdale College.

    • Monsignor Paul McPartlan Speaking In London

      On 6 March, Monsignor Paul McPartlan gave a talk in London to clergy of the diocese of Westminster on Dei Verbum, Vatican II's dogmatic constitution on divine revelation, as part of a series of talks to mark the Year of Faith and the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council.

    • Dr. John Grabowski Presented at Diocese of Richmond NFP Symposium

      On Sunday, March 3, Dr. Grabowski delivered two presentations at the Diocese of Richmond's NFP Symposium in Richmond, VA. The first was a keynote address entitled: "The Moral Difference between Contraception and NFP: Towards a Deeper Understanding of the Church's Vision." The presentation gave an overview of the challenges posed to the Church's teaching by social, medical, and theological developments of the 20th century and the ways in Catholic teaching has sought to respond to them. The second was a workshop entitled "Integrating NFP into the Stages of Marriage Preparation: Remote, Proximate, Immediate, and Ongoing." This presentation examined the current status of NFP education in programs of marriage preparation across the U.S. and ways in which this education might be made more comprehensive and effective.

      Dr. Robert Miller Featured in Biblical Archaeology Review

      Dr. Robert Miller is featured in the "Archaeological Views" column of the March/April issue of the popular journal Biblical Archaeology Review . The column, entitled "Israelite Life Before the Kings," highlights the newly published reprint edition of Dr. Miller's book, Chieftains of the Highland Clans: A History of Israel in the 12th and 11th Centuries BC.

      On February 6, Fr. Nicholas Lombardo gave a lecture at the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies at Providence College. He spoke on "How to Be Bored: Some Suggestions from Literature, Theology, and Thomas Aquinas."

    • Dr. John Grabowski Publishes Article in Pontifical Council for the Family Newsletter

      Dr. John Grabowski recently published, "Reflections on Pope Benedict XVI's Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives "  in the newsletter of the Pontifical Council for the Family.  No. 4 (2013) . The articles gives an overview of Pope Benedict's recent book and highlights some of its relevance for present day families.

    • Dr. John Grabowski Presented on Theology of the Body at Holy Family Church, Middletown, MD

      On February 2nd Dr. Grabowski gave a presentation on "The Theology of the Body: A Primer for Parents" at Holy Family Church in Middletown, MD. The presentation gave an overview of Blessed John Paul II's Theology of the Body Catecheses and how they can serve as a resource for parents in providing chastity education to their teens.

    • Msgr. Stephen J. Rossetti Gives Lenten Day of Recollection for Green Bay Priests

      Msgr Stephen J. Rossetti gave the first Lenten Day of Recollection for the priests of the Diocese of Green Bay on Friday, February 15. Forty-five priests and three bishops attended. Msgr. Rossetti spoke about a spirituality of diocesan priesthood and ended the day with reflections on Eucharistic gratitude and Christian joy. The Diocese plans to continue having these Lenten reflection days for its priests every year. During a break in the workshop, Msgr. Rossetti gave an interview for the diocesan newspaper and after the workshop was over, he gave a 30 minute live radio interview for the Catholic station-- Relevant Radio.

    • Dr. Pecknold Publishes Essays in Two Festschrifts

      Dr. Chad Pecknold has recently published essays on the discipline of theology in honor of two distinguished theologians, Ralph Del Colle and David Ford.  In honor of the late Ralph Del Colle, Pecknold contributed an essay, "The Humble Greatness of Theology," to Michel Rene Barnes (Ed.) A Man of the Church

    • Professor Michael Root Lectures on Vatican II

      Professor Root gave a lecture at Loyola University Maryland on "Vatican II on Ecumensim: Reform, Rupture, or What?" on Feb. 7, 2013. This was the first in a series of lectures on Vatican II sponsored by Loyola University's Catholic Studies program.

    • Dr. Miller Lectures at National Museum of Language

      On February 3rd, Dr. Robert Miller presented a lecture as part of the Amelia C. Murdoch 2013 Speaker Series at the National Museum of Language in College Park, MD. His presentation, " Oral Literature and Performance in Ancient Israel," explored the nature of orality and literacy in ancient Israel, the nature of its oral literature, and the ways in which this literature would have been performed and received.

      New Database of Latin and English Texts Dedicated to the Writings of Francis and Clare of Assisi is Now Available

      The database of Latin and English texts dedicated to the writings of Francis and Clare of Assisi, the Digital Francis and Clare of Assisi: Early Documents is now available. Dr. Benson was one of the principle editors, directors and encoders of the database. Fr. Regis Armstrong was one of the principal translators of the print volumes upon which the series is based. The database is a groundbreaking new way to view, search, and teach with these important texts. The database can be visited by clicking the link above.

    • Dr. Joshua Benson Publishes Article

      Dr. Benson has published "Bonaventure's Inaugural Sermon at Paris: Omnium Artifex Docuit Me Sapientia. Introduction and Text," in Collectanea Franciscana 82/3-4 (2012), 517-562. The publication is the latest in a series of publications that Dr. Benson has authored regarding Bonaventure's inaugural sermon at Paris. This publication provides the first edition ever made of the sermon itself.

    • Dr. David Bosworth Publishes “Weeping in the Psalms”

      Dr. Bosworth has published "Weeping in the Psalms" in Vetus Testamentum 62 (2013) 36-46. The article correlates modern scientific study of weeping with its use in the Psalter. Research on weeping indicates that crying is a behavior motivated by the need for relationship and care-giving and that tears generate powerful reactions in people that witness them. In the Psalms, speakers draw on the powerful non-verbal eloquence of weeping by mentioning their tears in the contexts of their prayers in order to motivate God to help. This article describes how the motif of weeping functions in the Psalms and analyzes its distribution in the Psalter.

    • Dr. Robert Miller Named to Affiliated Faculty in South Africa

      Dr. Miller has been appointed a Research Associate of the Department of Old Testament Studies of the University of Pretoria. The University was founded in 1908 and its Old Testament program is one of the most respected in Africa. Click the link above for more information about the Department.

      A group of current and former faculty and alumni of CUA gathered in Albuquerque, NM, during the annual meeting of the North American Academy of Liturgy, January 3-6, 2013. Current faculty present included Dean Mark Morozowich, liturgy area director Dominic Serra, and faculty Margaret Mary Kelleher, Margaret Schreiber, Michael Witczak, and Lecturer Katharine Harmon. Former faculty in attendance included Gerard Austin. Alums present included Nick Denysenko, Gabriel Pivarnik, Richard McCarron, James Donohue, Donald LaSalle, Robert (Roc) O'Connor, Heidi Miller, James Sabak, Stephen Wilbricht, Catherine Vincie, Mark Wedig, and Judith Kubicki.

    • Fr. Witczak delivers VP address at national liturgy meeting

      Associate Professor Michael G. Witczak delivered the Vice Presidential Address at the annual meeting of the North American Academy of Liturgy, meeting in Albuquerque, NM, January 3-6, 2013. The address was entitled: "The Liturgical Movement: A Personal Examen." Witczak explored the concept of the "liturgical movement" as a historical pattern of understanding and then offered brief profiles of the key influences on his development as a student of the liturgy. The talk concluded with his contention that liturgy is fundamentally a theological discipline. Witczak took up the office of president of the Academy at the end of the meeting and will preside at the meeting in Orlando, FL, Jan. 2-5, 2014.

    • Dr. Matt Tapie Presents Paper at the Society of Christian Ethics Annual Meeting

      On January 4th, Dr. Matt Tapie presented a paper entitled, "Thomas Aquinas as Resource for the New Black Theology," at the 2013 annual meeting of the Society of Christian Ethics in Chicago.
