Sacrosanctum Concillium 50th Anniversary Scholarly Symposium Held
International scholars gathered at The Catholic University of America for a symposium honoring the 50th Anniversary of the promulgation of the Second Vatican Council's Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concillium): Tradition and Progress. The purpose of the symposium was to encourage high level scholarly discussion in order to rekindle enthusiasm for the hope and challenge offered to us by the Constitution. Dean Mark Morozowich welcomed the participants and commented: "this opportunity to engage the tradition of the Catholic Church and to look at the interplay with liturgical progress presents an important moment for us to reflect critically and enter into frank discussion about the future."
The Sacrosanctum Concilium symposium participants focused their discussions around four themes:
- The Guiding Vision of the Liturgical Reforms Mandated by Sacrosanctum Concilium presented by four CUA professors, Msgr. Kevin Irwin, Rev. Michael Witczak, Sr. Margaret Mary Kelleher, O.S.U., and Rev. Dominic Serra
- " Sacrosanctum Concilium and the Augsburg Confession in Dialogue: On the Ecumenical Implications of the Constitution" presented by Rev. Gordon Lathrop
- "The Constitution's Approach to Liturgy and Culture" presented by Rev. Mark Francis, C.S.V.
- "The Constitution's Promise and Challenge for the Future" presented by Sr. Catherine Vincie, R.S.H.M. Each plenary session was followed by discussion and short papers related to the theme.
The more than forty participants included other CUA faculty: Rev. Stefanos Alexopoulos, Msgr. Paul McPartlan, and Sr. Margaret Mary Schreiber, O.P., Professor emeritus Rev. David Power, O.M.I., and distinguished lecturer Rev. Gerard Sloyan also participated.
