Dr. David Lantigua Gives Lecture at the Shaw Library in DC Dr. David Lantigua delivers lecture entitled "Bishops of the Poor in the Latin American Tradition of Human Rights" at the Shaw Library in Washington, DC in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month and Pope Francis' historic visit. Dr. Lantigua discussed how Latin America has developed a distinctive tradition of human rights shaped by a preferential option for poor and oppressed peoples on the margins of life. The lecture considered the important, and sometimes deeply conflicted, role of the Catholic Church in giving public voice to the poor, from Bishop Bartolomé de las Casas in the 16th century to Archbishop Oscar Romero in the 20th century. It also reflected on the first Latin American Pope, Francis, who embodies this tradition through his special concern for poor migrants and refugees.
